birding opportunities around Perth

In the far south-west of Australia lies one of the world’s most isolated cities: Perth. To its north are inhospitable outback deserts. To its south is one of Australia’s best birding locations, where a great number of species occur that cannot be found elsewhere in the country, including 15 endemics.

These include Short-billed and Long-billed Black-Cockatoos, Western Corella, Red-capped Parrot, Western Rosella, Western Wattlebird, Western Spinebill, Gilbert’s Honeyeater, Red-winged Fairywren, Red-eared Firetail, Western Thornbill, Western Fieldwren and White-breasted Robin; and the infamous skulking trio: Noisy Scrub-bird, Western Whipbird and Western Bristlebird. Other good species to be found in the wider region include Southern Emuwren, White-cheeked Honeyeater, Western Yellow Robin, Western Whistler, Blue-breasted Fairywren, Rufous Treecreeper and (Western) Crested Shrike-tit, as well as Regent, Elegant & Rock Parrot.

Our privately birding tours take in a range of habitats in the Perth area, including urban wetlands, jarrah forest and woodlands, the coast and the Swan River. On a day trip, expect to see 70-100 species, including up to 11 endemics, depending on the season and the weather.

Two Days Guided Birdwatching Tour from Perth, WA

After departing Perth while looking for Short-billed Black Cockatoo, we find ourselves in the forest areas near Jarrahdale, which offers a nice introduction to the South West’s endemic and near endemic bird species. Western Yellow Robin, Red-winged Fairy Wren, White-breasted Robin and Western Rosella are frequently encountered here. We’ll then check out a spot near a waterhole for Chestnut-rumped Thornbill and its close relative, another SW endemic, Western Thornbill. In the afternoon we arrive in
Dryandra State Forest, the last main stronghold of a cute marsupial named the Numbat. The reserve also has a good healthy bird population including ground-dwellers like Bush Stone-curlew and Painted Button Quail. After our evening meal, there will be the option of a night drive that potentially can produce Owlet Nightjar, Tawny Frogmouth, Southern Boobook, and on occasion, other owl species and several nice native mammals.

The next morning we spend birding the reserve looking for the elusive Western Shrike-tit, the gregarious White-browed Babbler, the subtle Brown-headed Honeyeater, the recently split Swan River Honeyeater and its close relative the Gilbert’s Honeyeater, the black-and-white Hooded Robin, the cute Blue-breasted Fairy-wren and numerous other nice birds. The recently split Western Whistler is to be found within the reserve.

On the way back to Perth we check out various natural areas of bush and coastal sites, looking for Western Rosella, Red-capped Parrot and with luck, Regent Parrot. Some of the local wetlands hold Musk and Freckled Duck and Spotted Crake, while we may be lucky to spot a Square-tailed Kite soaring above us. Eventually we return back to Perth in time for your dinner back at your hotel.

Longer Birdwatching Trips from Perth
